From Day One of Pinoy Dream Academy, she proved to be one of the most talented but also the most controversial contestants on the ABS-CBN reality talent search. Now that the show is over, 20-year-old Cebuana rocker Mariangela Soleil Trinidad, called Panky…
for short, says her stint on the show was a wake-up call that taught her a lot of things not just about music or singing, but about getting along with other people. Before she was picked as one of the original 16 scholars to enter the Academy, Panky admits that she was self-centered and immature, a fact she demonstrated when she threatened to commit suicide, insisting that “suicide is the highest form of art—and I’m a true artist”. Moody and temperamental, Panky also got into a number of fights with her fellow scholars.
These episodes turned the tide of public opinion against her. But after a serious talk with Pinoy Dream Academy headmaster Jim Paredes, Panky realized how immature she was acting.
In an interview, Panky said that she did those things not because she wanted to hurt or manipulate anyone. She wasn’t deliberately being mean. In her immaturity, she was just not aware that what she was doing was hurting others.
Slowly, she began to change. She learned how to get along with other people. She found God, bringing a softer side to her image as a tough rocker chick. “While I was in the Academy, I learned a lot of things about myself. I learned how to be a better version of myself,” says Panky. “I realised I can be tough, but at the same time, I can also give way to others.”
Panky says the time she spent in the Academy, learning with and from her teachers and fellow scholars was one of the best times of her life. She has no regrets about anything she did, and embraces both the good and the bad moments. “If those things didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be who I am today,” she points out.
Panky’s transformation came to a head when she made it to the PDA Headmaster’s Honor List of Six, composed of the top six finalists from out of the thousands from all over the Philippines and abroad who auditioned for a shot at a performing career and a prize package that included P1 million in cash.
She was eventually eliminated from the top six. She made it to fourth place, narrowly missing the third place spot because of text votes. But even if her PDA experience ended that way, Panky says she wouldn’t give it up for the world. Because through PDA, she found the most important thing: herself.
